Newcastle United secured their place in the Carabao Cup last 16 with a 1-0 victory over League Two side AFC Wimbledon, thanks to a Fabian Schar penalty. The decisive moment came just before half-time when Miguel Almiron was fouled by Joe Pigott, leading to Schar calmly converting the spot-kick after a lengthy consultation between referee Darren Bond and his assistant.
Although the scoreline was narrow, Newcastle dominated possession and created several chances. Miguel Almiron, Harvey Barnes, and Sean Longstaff all came close to extending the lead, while Wimbledon failed to register a single shot on target.
This third-round tie had been rescheduled to St James’ Park due to flooding at Wimbledon’s Plough Lane stadium. Newcastle generously donated £15,000 to help with repair efforts, a gesture appreciated by the visiting fans. However, on the pitch, Eddie Howe’s side, which featured eight changes from their draw against Manchester City, was too strong for the spirited but limited Dons.
Newcastle will now face Chelsea at St James’ Park in the fourth round on 30 October.
