New Wales Coach Craig Bellamy Backs Aaron Ramsey to Continue Leading as Captain

New Wales head coach Craig Bellamy has expressed his confidence in captain Aaron Ramsey, stating that the 33-year-old midfielder still has much to offer despite his injury struggles. Ramsey, who managed just 15 appearances for Wales and Cardiff City last season due to injuries, will continue as Wales’ captain under Bellamy’s leadership.

Bellamy, who took over as head coach in July on a four-year contract, emphasized Ramsey’s significance to Welsh football, describing him as one of the best players to have ever represented the country. “We’re talking about a player who’s represented Arsenal and won cups, he’s been at Juventus and Nice,” Bellamy said, highlighting Ramsey’s illustrious career.

Bellamy and Ramsey share a history as former teammates at both Cardiff and Wales, and the coach revealed that they have discussed Ramsey’s role moving forward. “We’ve had conversations about the role I see him playing, and what I expect from him,” Bellamy said, expressing optimism about Ramsey’s potential impact.

Ramsey, who has scored 21 goals in 84 appearances for Wales, has been a central figure in the national team’s recent successes, including their qualification for two European Championships and a World Cup. His leadership qualities were evident when he supported Bellamy’s candidacy for the head coach role following Rob Page’s dismissal.

Bellamy, who previously captained Wales between 2007 and 2010 before passing the armband to a young Ramsey, believes the veteran midfielder’s experience and attitude will be invaluable to the team, especially in mentoring younger players like Lewis Koumas. “What he brings into the squad with young players – they’re aspiring to be that. He can help them with that,” Bellamy noted.

Ramsey has expressed his excitement about working with Bellamy, and the coach is confident that his playing style will suit the captain. “He’s great to have around. There’s still football in him and I believe the way I look to play will help him as well. He will enjoy,” Bellamy added.
