Nelly Korda Leads U.S. to Dominant Start in Solheim Cup

World number one Nelly Korda spearheaded a commanding performance by the United States as they overpowered Europe on the opening day of the Solheim Cup in Virginia. Korda, in sublime form, won both her matches, helping the U.S. to a 6-2 lead, the largest day-one margin in the competition’s history.

Teaming up with Allisen Corpuz, Korda claimed the first point in the morning foursomes, then partnered with Megan Khang to secure a decisive 6&4 victory in the afternoon fourballs. Despite Europe’s best efforts, including a victory from Anna Nordqvist and Madelene Sagstrom, it was largely a bruising day for the visitors.

US captain Stacy Lewis, thrilled with the day’s play, praised her team’s “unbelievable golf,” but cautioned her players not to get complacent, saying, “We’ve got to go out there like it’s 0-0.”

Europe’s captain, Suzann Pettersen, remained optimistic despite the deficit, reminding her team that they had bounced back before, most notably after last year’s comeback draw in Spain.

As the U.S. aims for its first Solheim Cup win since 2017, Europe, the defending champions, will need a strong response to turn the tide on Saturday.
