Wales head coach Craig Bellamy has admitted that starting veteran midfielder Joe Allen in Monday’s Nations League clash against Montenegro would be a risk, but he’s captivated by the “romance” of seeing Allen back in action for his country. The 34-year-old came out of international retirement to join Wales’ squad for the October fixtures, though he did not feature in Friday’s 2-2 draw against Iceland due to fitness concerns.
Allen, who has only made six substitute appearances for Swansea City this season, faces a potential return to a depleted Wales midfield, with key players Ethan Ampadu, Aaron Ramsey, and Jordan James all unavailable. Bellamy acknowledged the gamble involved with Allen’s lack of match time but praised the midfielder’s positive impact on the squad.
“Of course he’s a gamble if you throw him in from the start because of his minutes and football this year,” said Bellamy. “That goes for a lot of our players as well… Hopefully he kicks the ball for me tomorrow.”
Allen, who retired from international football in 2023 after earning 74 caps and playing in two European Championships and a World Cup, would likely receive a rapturous welcome at Cardiff City Stadium if he features against Montenegro.
Bellamy, appointed as head coach in July, is eager to make use of Allen’s experience, particularly in a Wales side short of options in midfield. With the absence of regulars like Ampadu and James, the coach is left with limited choices, including Allen, Ollie Cooper from Swansea, and Bolton Wanderers’ Josh Sheehan.
“We are light in the number six area… It’s a really important area for how we play,” Bellamy admitted, but he remains optimistic about testing other players in the crucial midfield role as Wales look to secure a win.
