Mystery Surrounds Detention of Ewu Kingdom Traditional Ruler by Nigerian Military

The whereabouts of Clement Ikolo, the traditional ruler of Ewu Kingdom in Delta State, have become a cause of concern as his family and friends remain unaware of his location for over a month since his detention by the Nigerian military.

According to a statement by Abizor Henry, the Secretary of the Ewu-Urhobo Traditional Council of Chiefs, efforts to ascertain Ikolo’s well-being and secure access for family members have been unsuccessful despite appeals by his lawyer, Ama Etuwewe (SAN). The lack of communication has left supporters perplexed, especially considering Ikolo’s voluntary surrender to the security forces and commendation by the Chief of Defence Staff.

The statement sheds light on the circumstances leading to Ikolo’s detention, including his involvement in the aftermath of the killing of 17 military personnel in the Okuama community. Despite turning himself in to the police and subsequently being handed over to the military, Ikolo’s detention has raised questions about due process and transparency.

Henry’s statement also outlines the challenges Ikolo faced during his ascension to the throne, marked by opposition from rival claimants and incidents of violence orchestrated by armed supporters. Despite his efforts to reconcile differences and promote peace, Ikolo found himself embroiled in controversy following the tragic incident in Okuama.

The sudden declaration of Ikolo as wanted by the military without prior notification or invitation has further deepened the mystery surrounding his detention. Despite his assertion of innocence and voluntary surrender to the authorities, Ikolo has remained in military custody since March 29, 2024.
