In celebration of the 2024 World Teachers’ Day, Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman has called on Nigerian teachers to remain resilient despite the challenges they face, assuring them that their hard work will be recognized in due time. Speaking during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Mamman, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, acknowledged the difficult conditions many teachers work under, emphasizing their dedication to the education and development of Nigerian children.
Mamman stated, “We are aware that the voices of our teachers have contributed immensely to changes in the world. They have been building men and women and making their attributes worthwhile. They are contributing much more to human capital development.”
He commended the contributions of teachers both locally and internationally, urging them to embrace modern teaching methods and technology despite current challenges. “Even when faced with challenges, they demonstrate resilience and remain dedicated in their responsibilities,” he said.
The minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to support the teaching profession, including the establishment of specialized universities of education and bursaries for students in Nigerian universities. He revealed that 3,317 students benefited from these bursaries in the 2022 academic year, with even more recipients in 2024.
Mamman stressed that teachers’ welfare remains a priority for the government, adding that teachers will be rewarded for their contributions “not only in heaven but beginning here on earth.”
The event concluded with awards of excellence given to some outstanding teachers, with the minister encouraging those who are yet to be recognized to remain committed to their work. “Your voices are valued,” he said.
