Former Super Eagles and Chelsea star, Mikel Obi, has expressed his desire for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen to join Chelsea, following speculation surrounding Osimhen’s future as he prepares to depart Napoli in the summer.
Speaking at the Web Summit Qatar via Calciomercato.com, Mikel disclosed that there is mutual interest between Osimhen and Chelsea, with the young forward reportedly attracting attention from various top European clubs.
“I think there is genuine interest on both sides. I’m convinced that Victor wants to come to Chelsea; obviously, he wants to follow in my footsteps and the Nigerian players who played for Chelsea, such as Victor Moses, Celestine Babayaro,” Mikel stated.
Highlighting the allure of London as a city and its comparison to other footballing hubs, Mikel emphasized the potential benefits of Osimhen joining Chelsea.
Mikel revealed that he has personally reached out to Osimhen, acting as an advocate for Chelsea’s interest in securing the striker’s signature.
“He also has many clubs interested in him, such as PSG and Manchester United, but I am pushing, sending him messages, and trying to make sure that there is only one club in his mind: the Blues!”
In the aftermath of Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, Mikel underscored the pressing need for a prolific goal-scorer within the Chelsea squad. He emphasized Osimhen’s goal-scoring prowess and the potential impact he could have on the team.
“I am pushing him. I hope he comes to the club because he will bring so much to the club. I think the one thing we lack—anyone who watched the [Carabao Cup] final on Sunday will see the one thing we are lacking is scoring goals.”
Reports suggest that Osimhen’s potential move to Chelsea could come at a significant cost, with Napoli reportedly demanding €130 million for the striker’s transfer.
