Mercy Johnson Faces Backlash for Endorsing APC Candidate in Edo Gubernatorial Race

Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie has drawn criticism on social media following her public endorsement of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Monday Okpebholo for the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial election. The actress was seen in a viral video urging voters to support Okpebholo, citing the need for change due to the state’s lack of basic amenities like electricity, water, healthcare, and security.

“Are you not tired? No light, water, healthcare, security, and good roads. If you will vote for Senator Monday, raise your hand,” Johnson-Okojie said during a rally, adding, “Vote for Monday, vote for APC, vote for the broom.”

Her endorsement has sparked backlash, with social media users criticizing her for supporting the ruling APC amidst widespread economic challenges in the country. Critics, like @masurge, accused the actress of being opportunistic and disregarding the hardships Nigerians face. Others expressed disappointment over her political stance, given the party’s controversial reputation.

Okpebholo is set to compete against Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) in the upcoming September 21 election.
