McIlroy Narrows Gap on Schauffele in Wells Fargo Championship

In an electrifying third round at the Wells Fargo Championship, Rory McIlroy showcased his prowess with a bogey-free performance, narrowing Xander Schauffele’s lead to just one shot. McIlroy, a three-time champion at Quail Hollow, displayed his mastery of the course with a four-under-par 67, closing the gap on leader Schauffele.

Starting the round four shots behind Schauffele, McIlroy’s stellar performance included two birdies on the front nine and an additional two on the back nine. His flawless round put him firmly in contention for a fourth victory at the tournament, showcasing his ability to thrive under pressure.

Meanwhile, Schauffele maintained his steady form, carding a one-under 70 with two birdies and an eagle. Despite McIlroy’s charge, Schauffele’s consistency kept him at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round.

Sungjae Im and Sepp Straka remain within striking distance of the leaders, trailing Schauffele by four and five shots respectively.

Among the English contingent, Tommy Fleetwood enjoyed a solid round, climbing to tied 18th with an even-par 71. However, Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick faced struggles, dropping eight and seven shots respectively, resulting in a significant slide down the leaderboard.
