Kylian Mbappe made a triumphant return from injury by scoring a crucial goal as Paris St-Germain asserted their dominance in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Real Sociedad.
The French champions, who have often faltered in the competition despite their star-studded squad, were struggling to break down Real Sociedad’s defense until Mbappe’s intervention.
Having sat out the previous match due to an ankle problem, Mbappe found the net from close range after a corner, putting PSG ahead in a tense encounter.
The Parisian side doubled their lead when Bradley Barcola produced a delightful finish past Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro, further cementing their advantage.
Despite denying Mbappe a second goal with a superb save that tipped the ball onto the crossbar, Remiro couldn’t prevent PSG from securing a crucial victory at home.
PSG manager Luis Enrique expressed his relief at the halftime turnaround, admitting, “If you told me at half-time we would win 2-0, I would be dancing for two hours.”
Real Sociedad, meanwhile, will be disappointed with their performance but will look to regroup for the second leg in Spain on 5 March, where they aim to mount a comeback.
Mbappe’s performance highlighted his importance to PSG, especially amid ongoing speculation about his future. The prolific forward has been instrumental for PSG this season, being directly involved in 38 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions.
While his contract situation remains uncertain, Mbappe’s commitment on the pitch is unquestionable, with his impressive display against Real Sociedad showcasing his lethal finishing ability.
The absence of Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal due to injury was keenly felt, and manager Imanol Alguacil will hope to have him back for the decisive second leg.
Despite the setback in Paris, Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino remains optimistic about his side’s chances, emphasizing the importance of home advantage and their fans’ support in their quest to overturn the deficit.
With PSG now firmly in control, the pressure is on Real Sociedad to deliver a more attacking display in the return leg if they are to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
