Marseille Signs Mason Greenwood from Manchester United in €31.6m Deal

Marseille has completed the signing of forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United in a deal worth up to €31.6 million (£26.6 million). Greenwood, 22, who emerged from United’s academy, has not played for the Premier League club since January 2022 and spent last season on loan at Getafe.

The transfer comes after serious charges against Greenwood, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023. Despite the legal resolution, Marseille faced criticism from the city’s mayor when their intention to sign Greenwood became public.

Greenwood debuted competitively for Manchester United in 2019 against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League. Over his tenure, he scored 35 goals in 129 appearances and earned his sole England cap in 2020.

In August 2023, Manchester United announced that Greenwood would leave the club by mutual agreement following a six-month internal investigation into his conduct. He subsequently joined La Liga side Getafe, where he revitalized his career by scoring 10 goals and providing six assists in 36 appearances.

Manchester United has included a significant sell-on clause in the deal with Marseille, wishing Greenwood well on their website.
