Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria Threatens Action Over NLC President’s Arrest

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has expressed its readiness to support any directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) following the arrest of NLC President, Joe Ajaero, by the Department of State Services (DSS). The arrest occurred at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where Ajaero was reportedly detained without a warrant while en route to attend a workers’ congress in the UK.

In a statement signed by MWUN President-General, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, the union condemned the actions of the DSS, describing the arrest as an infringement on Ajaero’s fundamental human rights. Adeyanju emphasized that Ajaero was neither a fugitive nor a wanted individual, calling the incident a deliberate attempt to humiliate and intimidate the labor leader.

“The arrest of the NLC President without warrant and his subsequent detention is condemnable in its entirety. Joe Ajaero is not a wanted person anywhere in the world, and this act is an unjustifiable violation of his rights,” the statement read.

The MWUN further demanded Ajaero’s immediate and unconditional release, warning that failure to comply could lead to the union taking action in line with NLC directives. Adeyanju stressed that the union would not tolerate any form of intimidation against the labor movement and its leaders.
