Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Khadija Shaw have been crowned the Footballers of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association, marking their outstanding contributions to their respective teams.
Foden, 23, has had a stellar season, netting an impressive 24 goals and providing 10 assists across 50 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City. The versatile England midfielder clinched the men’s award with 42% of the vote, surpassing contenders like Declan Rice and teammate Rodri.
Expressing his pride at receiving the accolade, Foden stated, “I’m immensely proud to have won this award. Now I am focused on seeking to finish the season as strongly as possible and to try to help City win more trophies.” His achievement adds to Manchester City’s recent dominance in the FWA awards, following Erling Haaland and Ruben Dias in previous years.
Meanwhile, Khadija Shaw, 27, has been a force to be reckoned with in the Women’s Super League, leading the scoring charts with 21 goals in 18 games. Despite being sidelined with a foot injury for the remainder of the season, Shaw’s remarkable performance earned her the women’s award, edging out competitors like Lauren James and teammate Alex Greenwood.
In response to her recognition, Shaw expressed her gratitude, stating, “To be recognized in this way is a special honor.” Shaw becomes the second Manchester City player to claim the award since its inception in 2018, following in the footsteps of Nikita Parris.
Both Foden and Shaw have played pivotal roles in their teams’ successes this season. With Manchester City’s men’s team vying for a fourth consecutive Premier League title and the women’s team leading the WSL by six points, their contributions have been instrumental in driving their respective clubs towards glory.
