MAN Urges Africa to Balance Carbon Footprint Reduction with Economic Growth

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has called on African nations to address their carbon emissions while simultaneously tackling socioeconomic challenges that hinder sustainable development. Speaking during a webinar titled “Ensuring Just Enforcement of Carbon Footprint Emissions: A Call to Action,” MAN’s Director General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, stressed the importance of coordinated action across the continent.

“It is imperative that we take swift and deliberate action to reduce our carbon footprint and ensure sustainability. The narrative on the continent of Africa presents very unique challenges that demand tailored solutions designed to meet our specific needs,” Ajayi-Kadir said.

He emphasized that alongside environmental efforts, African nations must confront critical issues such as unemployment, energy poverty, and low technology penetration, which impede progress.

Ajayi-Kadir called for government support for manufacturers striving to adopt sustainable practices, urging collaboration and knowledge-sharing to ensure African industries can thrive without compromising the environment. “This webinar is an opportunity for us to come together, share knowledge and best practices, and collaborate on solutions to address carbon emissions in our industry,” he added.

Highlighting the investment manufacturers have made in areas like recycling and water stewardship, Ajayi-Kadir encouraged governments to implement policies that complement these efforts without stifling economic growth. He concluded by advocating for a balanced approach to carbon enforcement that protects the environment while safeguarding Africa’s economic future.
