Lukman Adejoju, a resident of Kajola Village near Apomu in Osun State, has been apprehended by state police operatives for the alleged murder of his mother, Aminat, following a dispute over the proceeds from the sale of palm oil.
According to an eyewitness identified as Rasaki, the altercation ensued when Lukman and the deceased engaged a labourer to assist in selling kegs of palm oil. Tensions flared when Aminat insisted on receiving the money directly, sparking anger in Lukman.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday around 4 p.m., leading to shock and dismay among residents of Kajola village near Apomu. Lukman, reportedly around 63 years old, clashed with his mother, aged approximately 100 years, over control of the sales proceeds, ultimately resulting in her demise.
The escalating situation prompted a swift response from security agencies, including the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to restore calm to the village.
Confirming the arrest, NSCDC spokesperson Kehinde Adeleke stated that Lukman had been taken into custody and transferred to a police station in Apomu. Meanwhile, Osun State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, disclosed that the suspect had been moved to the command headquarters in Osogbo for further investigation.
Opalola revealed that Lukman admitted to pushing his mother during the altercation, leading to her fatal fall. The suspect claimed he was unable to explain his actions, attributing them to an inexplicable impulse.
