Mali’s Hamari Traore Receives Four-Match Ban for Referee Confrontation

Mali’s national team captain, Hamari Traore, has been handed a four-match ban following his unsporting conduct towards a referee during his team’s quarter-final defeat by Ivory Coast at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The 32-year-old defender was sent off immediately after the final whistle, prompting a confrontation with Egyptian referee Mohamed Adel.

The incident, which saw Traore and the referee pushing each other, resulted in his dismissal from the match. Traore’s ban includes a suspended portion, with half of the punishment deferred for a year.

In addition to Traore’s suspension, Mali’s football federation has been fined $10,000 for the unsporting behavior displayed by its players towards the match official. Similarly, Ivory Coast’s federation has been penalized $5,000 for misconduct by its players during the match.

Meanwhile, Senegal’s Krepin Diatta has also faced disciplinary action for remarks made after the Teranga Lions’ defeat to Ivory Coast in the last 16. Diatta, aged 24, has been banned for four matches, with two games suspended for a year, and fined $10,000 for bringing the Confederation of African Football into disrepute.

The Senegalese federation has been fined $5,000 for the misconduct of its players during the tournament.
