Substitute Donyell Malen scored twice, and Cody Gakpo netted his third goal of Euro 2024 as the Netherlands overcame a spirited Romania to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 16 years.
Liverpool forward Gakpo opened the scoring midway through the first half with a brilliant finish, cutting inside before driving the ball into the bottom corner.
The Netherlands missed several chances but avoided paying for it when Malen, coming on at halftime, stabbed in a goal from Gakpo’s ball late in the game. Malen then sealed the win by slotting home a second as Romania pushed players forward in a desperate attempt to equalize.
Romania started with enthusiasm, backed by loud and colorful fans, and created early pressure that forced the Dutch into mistakes. Dennis Man’s shot over the bar was Romania’s best early chance. However, Gakpo’s goal shifted the game’s momentum, and the Netherlands could have gone further ahead just before the break, with Xavi Simons missing a close opportunity.
In the second half, Romania continued to fight, but the Netherlands had the better chances. Memphis Depay failed to score from close range, Virgil van Dijk hit the post with a header, and Gakpo’s driving run and shot were pushed behind. Malen’s two goals in the final 10 minutes ensured no late drama and secured the Netherlands’ spot in the last eight, where they will face either Turkey or a rematch with Austria.
Dutch Bounce Back After Austria Defeat
The Netherlands started Euro 2024 with four points from two games, ensuring their last-16 spot with a game to spare. However, a 3-2 defeat by Austria in their final group game raised concerns about their form. Despite a slow start against Romania, the Netherlands’ performance improved significantly after Gakpo’s goal, showcasing a high-tempo style of football that encouraged their fans.
Romania’s Run Ends
This was Romania’s first time reaching the knockout stages of the European Championship in 24 years, and their fans created a vibrant atmosphere at Allianz Arena. Romania pressed high and unsettled the Dutch early on, but after Gakpo’s goal, they struggled to mount a comeback. Despite the defeat, Romanian fans stayed long after the final whistle to applaud their team’s efforts in the tournament.
