Makinde Assures Oyo Residents of Adherence to Original Setback in Ibadan Circular Road Project

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reassured residents affected by the Ibadan Circular Road project that the government will honor the initial 150-meter setback established under former Governor Lam Adesina. The governor made the commitment on Monday, addressing concerns raised by residents from six local government areas who had staged a four-day protest at the Governor’s Office.

The protest stemmed from fears that a revised 500-meter setback would result in widespread demolitions of properties. In his response, Makinde praised the protesters for their peaceful conduct and clarified that the 150-meter setback—75 meters on each side—was the original standard set by the Adesina administration. He further explained that the expanded 500-meter setback was introduced during the administrations of Rahidi Ladoja in 2006 and late Senator Abiola Ajimobi in 2018, which his administration is now implementing.

“I want to thank you for your peaceful demonstration,” Makinde said. “This is your government. I don’t have a godfather; I have God the Father and you.”

The governor emphasized that the project aims to create jobs and attract industries to the region while committing to halting any further demolitions outside the original 150-meter setback. He assured residents that no homes within the current corridor would be demolished, noting, “Wherever the corridor is densely populated, we will integrate it.”

Makinde urged the community not to politicize the issue, stressing the importance of open dialogue and truthful communication. He also warned against new constructions in the area without proper approval, asking residents to refrain from starting new projects without adhering to planning guidelines.

“The government will take action against those attempting to seize land that does not belong to them,” he added, cautioning against land grabbers exploiting the situation.

Makinde concluded by reiterating his commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the people, stating, “Remember, you own this government, and I will always prioritize your well-being. However, the law must be upheld. Let us proceed according to plan.”
