Luis Suarez Bids Farewell as Uruguay Draws with Paraguay in World Cup Qualifier

Luis Suarez’s illustrious 17-year career with the Uruguay national team came to an emotional close as his side played to a goalless draw against Paraguay in a South American World Cup qualifier. The 37-year-old, who announced his international retirement earlier in the week, leaves as Uruguay’s all-time top scorer with 69 goals in 143 appearances since his debut in 2007.

Suarez and his family were honored on the pitch in a pre-game ceremony, which included tributes from fans and a video message from his Inter Miami teammate, Lionel Messi. Addressing the crowd, Suarez stated, “Uruguay is bigger than any player. Starting tomorrow, I will be another fan.”

Despite Uruguay’s 65% possession, they struggled to break down Paraguay’s resilient defense in a match that saw 24 fouls and six yellow cards, one of which went to Suarez. His best chance came in the first half when his shot struck the post.

Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron, from Newcastle, had the visitors’ best opportunity, but his effort was saved by Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet. Uruguay was missing five players due to suspension, including Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez and Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur, following an altercation during a Copa America loss to Colombia.

The draw leaves Uruguay second in the qualifying standings, four points behind leaders Argentina.

Elsewhere, Brazil reignited their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador, courtesy of a Rodrygo goal. Teenager Estevao Willian, set to join Chelsea, made his debut as a substitute.
