Louis Rees-Zammit Faces Uncertain Future with Kansas City Chiefs After Preseason Finale

Louis Rees-Zammit had a mixed showing in what could be his final opportunity to impress Kansas City Chiefs’ coaches before the NFL regular season begins. The former Wales rugby star was part of the Chiefs’ 34-21 defeat to the Chicago Bears on Thursday night, where he demonstrated both his versatility and inexperience in American football.

The 23-year-old, who made headlines earlier this year by leaving rugby to pursue a career in the NFL, was utilized in various roles during the preseason games. In his latest outing, Rees-Zammit was introduced on offense in the second half after playing a few special teams snaps in the first two quarters. His most notable contribution came in the fourth quarter, where he rushed for 10 yards and a first down—his longest run in the NFL to date.

Rees-Zammit’s journey from rugby union to American football began in January 2024 when he left Wales’ Six Nations squad to pursue what he described as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” After completing the NFL International Player Pathway (IPP) program, he signed a three-year deal with the Chiefs in March.

Despite some bright moments, Rees-Zammit’s performances have been overshadowed by other rookies, particularly Carson Steele, who has impressed as a running back throughout the preseason. While Rees-Zammit averaged 5.2 yards per carry against the Bears, Steele’s 31-yard run and touchdown have solidified his place in the running back hierarchy.

With the Chiefs needing to reduce their roster from 90 players to 53 by Tuesday, August 27, Rees-Zammit’s position is precarious. While his versatility is an asset, it may not be enough to secure a spot on the regular-season roster. Head coach Andy Reid and his staff have a difficult decision to make, as Rees-Zammit is currently on the ‘roster bubble’—the term used for players fighting for the final few spots.

Should he not make the 53-man roster, Rees-Zammit’s NFL journey will not necessarily be over. As part of the IPP, he has a guaranteed spot on the Chiefs’ practice squad, where he can continue to develop his skills and potentially be called up during the season if needed.

Rees-Zammit will now await the Chiefs’ final decision, which will determine whether he embarks on his first NFL regular season or spends the year honing his skills in the practice squad.
