Liverpool secured a hard-fought victory over Sheffield United to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League and maintain control of the title race.
The hosts took an early lead in the 17th minute when Darwin Nunez charged down Sheffield United goalkeeper Ivo Grbic’s clearance, resulting in an own goal. Despite dominating possession in the first half, Liverpool failed to capitalize on numerous chances.
Sheffield United managed to equalize in the 58th minute as Gustavo Hamer’s header deflected off Conor Bradley and into his own net. However, Argentina’s Alexis Mac Allister restored Liverpool’s lead with a stunning 20-yard strike in the 76th minute.
Although Mac Allister came close to adding a second with a curling free-kick that hit the crossbar, substitute Cody Gakpo sealed the victory for Liverpool with a header in the 90th minute.
The win puts Liverpool two points clear of Arsenal and three ahead of Manchester City, with each team having eight league matches remaining. Liverpool now has their title destiny in their own hands, needing victories against Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Everton, West Ham, Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Wolves to secure their second Premier League title.
Despite a valiant effort from Sheffield United, who had opportunities through James McAtee and Ben Brereton Diaz, Liverpool’s quality ultimately proved decisive. The victory provides a crucial boost for Liverpool as they prepare for a crucial fixture against Manchester United.
For Sheffield United, the defeat leaves them 10 points adrift of safety in their battle to avoid relegation. However, with matches against relegation rivals still to come, they will continue to fight for survival.
