Leverkusen Manager Xabi Alonso Eyes Unbeaten Bundesliga Season Amid Growing Pressure

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso acknowledged the mounting pressure on his side as they aim to secure an unbeaten Bundesliga season. With Leverkusen already crowned league champions for the first time, Alonso emphasized the significance of maintaining their unbeaten record, despite the increasing challenges they face.

“Everyone wants to beat us, of course. But we want to stay unbeaten. Every week it’s a bit more difficult but the goal is bigger,” Alonso stated ahead of Leverkusen’s upcoming fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Leverkusen’s quest for an unbeaten season has captured attention, especially considering that not even perennial champions Bayern Munich have achieved this feat in the Bundesliga. Currently on an impressive 47-game unbeaten run in all competitions, Leverkusen’s remarkable season could culminate in an unprecedented treble, with the team already in the German Cup final and one step away from the Europa League final.

However, Leverkusen will have to navigate their upcoming match against Frankfurt without Alonso on the sideline, as the coach will serve a suspension due to a yellow card. Despite this setback, Alonso expressed confidence in his team’s ability to perform without him and even suggested that the ban could provide a tactical advantage.

“It’s a new situation but hopefully it won’t have any influence on the team. I’m not worried about it,” Alonso reassured.

Reflecting on the team’s recent success, Alonso praised star midfielder Florian Wirtz, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Friday. Wirtz, who scored in Leverkusen’s recent Europa League victory over AS Roma, was lauded by Alonso for his contributions and potential.

“We celebrated with him and he gave a bit of a speech. He’s got a big future in front of him,” Alonso remarked, highlighting Wirtz’s promising talent and significance to the team’s achievements.
