Bayer Leverkusen squandered a two-goal lead as newly-promoted Holstein Kiel battled back to secure a 2-2 draw in the Bundesliga. Despite early goals from Victor Boniface and Jonas Hofmann, Kiel fought back through Max Geschwill and a Jann-Fiete Arp penalty to snatch a point.
Leverkusen looked in control within the first eight minutes of Xabi Alonso’s 100th game as manager, as Boniface and Hofmann put the hosts in the driving seat. However, Geschwill’s goal just before halftime gave Kiel hope, and Arp completed the comeback in the 69th minute from the penalty spot after Jeremie Frimpong fouled Armin Gigovic.
This marks the second time this season that Leverkusen have dropped points after leading by two goals, having previously lost 3-2 to RB Leipzig. The result leaves Leverkusen fifth in the table, trailing Bayern Munich by two points, with the leaders set to face Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.
