Larne’s historic European debut in the UEFA Conference League ended in a 3-0 defeat to Norwegian side Molde, marking the first time an Irish Premiership team has competed in the group stage of a European competition.
Despite the result, Tiernan Lynch’s side showed promise during the first half, frustrating their more experienced opponents. Larne, who have climbed from Northern Ireland’s second tier to become back-to-back Irish Premiership champions in just five years, kept Molde at bay for 51 minutes before the home side found their breakthrough.
Molde captain Magnus Wolff Eikrem opened the scoring with a powerful strike from a Kristian Eriksen cut-back early in the second half. Although Larne responded with more attacking intent as the match progressed, a second goal came through Ola Brynhildsen, whose composed finish sealed the win after Shaun Want’s attempted tackle fell kindly into his path.
Larne’s European debut ended on a sour note when Conor McKendry was shown a red card for a late tackle, and substitute Frederik Ihler added Molde’s third with the final kick of the game.
While Larne return home without points, their spirited performance in the first half, coupled with a resilient display overall, provides a foundation to build upon as they continue their European journey. They will next face Shamrock Rovers in their second group stage match on 24 October.
