Students from several tertiary institutions in Lagos State have announced their decision to forgo a planned nationwide protest in favor of a solidarity walk to support the state government. The national protest, tagged ‘#EndBad Governance in Nigeria,’ is set to run from August 1 to 10, aiming to highlight the issues of hunger and rising living costs under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
During a press conference held at the Lagos State University College of Medicine in Ikeja, student leaders representing the National Association of Nigerian Students in Lagos stated that the “Solidarity Walk” would demonstrate their support for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The students emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and avoiding a repeat of the 2020 #EndSARS protests.
Lekan Alimi, Chairman of NANS Lagos axis, addressed journalists on behalf of various tertiary institution student leaders, describing the planned national protest as “absolutely uncalled for.” Alimi and other student leaders highlighted their preference for constructive dialogue with the government over protests.
In his speech, Alimi praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration for its support of students and the state’s education system. He mentioned initiatives such as the establishment of new educational institutions, increased bursaries and scholarships, and the provision of buses for tertiary institutions.
Hafiz Olufowobi, President of the National Association of Lagos State Students, and other student leaders echoed Alimi’s sentiments, urging students to engage in activities that promote peace and stability. They also announced their intention to hold the solidarity walk from August 1 to 10, coinciding with the dates of the planned protest.
