Lagos State Launches Commercial Operations of Red Line Rail Service

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu officially launched the Red Line Rail Service in Lagos State on Tuesday, marking a significant step in enhancing transportation in the city. The rail service, projected to carry approximately 500,000 passengers daily, aims to improve mobility and reduce commuting time for residents.

The Red Line’s first phase spans 27 kilometers and includes eight stations: Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju, and Agbado. A complete journey from Oyingbo to Agbado takes about an hour and seven minutes, with each train accommodating up to 1,500 passengers. A ticket for the trip from Iju to Agege costs N500.

Governor Sanwo-Olu boarded the inaugural train at 5:20 PM, disembarking at Ikeja by 5:55 PM, to demonstrate the service. He emphasized that the Red Line, the second operational rail system in Lagos within two years, is crucial to achieving the state’s vision of a well-connected city.

“Today marks the launch of commercial operations of the LMRT Red Line, commencing passenger services from Agbado to Oyingbo,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “We are on a mission to keep Lagos moving, and the Red Line is a key part of our vision to create a seamlessly connected city.”

Sanwo-Olu urged residents to safeguard the new infrastructure from vandalism and noted that train services would gradually increase to meet commuter demand. He also encouraged passengers to use Cowry Cards for boarding and reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding transport options.

The rail service will operate daily, starting from Agbado at 6:00 AM. Buses will connect passengers from Oyingbo to Lagos Island, ensuring seamless transportation across the city.
