Lagos State Government to Initiate Trial in MohBad’s Death One Year Later

The Lagos State government is preparing to commence a trial regarding the death of superstar rapper and songwriter Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as MohBad, nearly one year after his passing. The announcement was made by the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), during a press briefing held at the ministry’s conference room in Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday.

Pedro acknowledged the delay in the case, attributing it to the time required for thorough investigations, including forensic analysis and toxicology reports. He emphasized that there is no statute of limitations on criminal offenses, stressing the importance of conducting a complete investigation to support a successful prosecution.

“The toxicology report from the United States has been received and is currently with the coroner,” Pedro stated, noting that the MohBad family has requested to conduct their independent forensic analysis. He assured that the legal advice on the case would be finalized soon, enabling the prosecution to proceed based on the available evidence.

He added, “Had the Lagos Forensic Laboratory not been destroyed during the EndSARS protests, the case would have concluded by now.” The AG mentioned the financial burden of sending samples abroad for analysis, which can cost thousands of dollars.

MohBad’s death on September 12, 2023, was initially attributed to natural causes; however, skepticism arose, leading to public demands for a deeper investigation. The official autopsy report generated controversy, as it did not align with the symptoms leading up to his death, prompting the Lagos State government to initiate a coroner’s inquest.

Pedro affirmed the government’s commitment to justice, stating, “As far as we are concerned, justice would be done.”

In addition to addressing MohBad’s case, the Attorney-General announced an upcoming strategic stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for October 23 and 24, 2024, focused on enhancing collaboration for effective justice delivery. Key participants will include representatives from various law enforcement agencies, aimed at improving inter-agency cooperation and addressing ongoing challenges within the justice system.

“This gathering is a direct response to insights gained from the Lagos Justice Summit held in May this year,” Pedro said, highlighting the meeting’s goal of elevating justice standards in Lagos State.
