The Lagos State Government has reiterated its determination to align with the United Nations Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, which aims to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by the year 2030. The state government has emphasized its commitment to improving road safety through enhanced driver education for professional drivers operating within the metropolis.

Speaking at the 2024 Driving School Instructors and Operators Train-the-Trainer Workshop, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, highlighted the importance of driver education in promoting road safety. He noted that educating drivers about vehicle positioning, collision anticipation, and emergency response is crucial for preventing fatalities from avoidable accidents.

“Driver education promotes awareness of vehicle positioning, the anticipation of potential collisions, and effective responses in emergencies, these are crucial in preventing fatalities caused by avoidable accidents,” Osiyemi stated.

He further emphasized that the state’s efforts to improve driver education are integral to achieving the UN’s road safety goals. The state government is also advocating for the inclusion of driver education in school curricula to further reduce road accidents and foster a safer driving environment.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, echoed these sentiments, urging driving instructors to instill values in drivers and ensure adherence to road safety regulations. He stressed that the success of Lagos State’s transport system depends on the ability of instructors to develop professional and safety-conscious drivers.

Musa also emphasized the importance of training drivers on the proper usage of road signs and adherence to the Lagos State Transport Reform Law of 2018.

General Manager of the Lagos State Drivers Institute, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, added that this year’s workshop theme, “The Role of Driver Education in Road Safety and Economic Development in the 21st Century,” aligns with the state’s development plan, which underscores safety as a key driver of economic growth.

Tiamiyu expressed gratitude to driving school instructors and operators for their role in disseminating crucial professional driving knowledge and urged them to continue enhancing road culture and safety across Lagos.

The event was attended by representatives from various agencies under the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and other stakeholders in the transport sector.
