Mrs. Oluchi Opara, the suspended National Treasurer of the Labour Party, has criticized the re-election of Julius Abure as the party’s national chairman for a second term. Abure’s re-election occurred at the recent convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, amid controversy surrounding party control and conflicts with the Joe Ajaero-led Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Opara condemned the convention, describing it as improperly conducted and secretive. She questioned the legitimacy of the gathering, alleging it was merely a gathering of Abure’s support group rather than a political convention.
In contrast, Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, defended the convention’s legitimacy, stating that it was conducted in accordance with the party’s rules, electoral laws, and constitution. He urged party members, including the aggrieved ones, to focus on resolving individual differences and work with the newly elected chairman.
