Labour Party Challenges Peter Obi and Alex Otti Over NEC Meeting

The Labour Party (LP) has issued a strong warning to its 2023 Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, over their planned National Executive Council (NEC) meeting. The party alleges that neither Obi nor Otti has the authority to convene such a meeting and accuses them of unconstitutional actions.

The controversy arose after Otti announced a stakeholder NEC meeting scheduled for September 4 at the Government House in Umuahia, Abia State. In response, the LP’s National Working Committee, led by National Chairman Barrister Julius Abure and National Secretary Alh Farouk Umar Ibrahim, issued a statement denouncing the move.

According to the LP, Obi and Otti’s attempt to organize the meeting violates party regulations. The party’s statement, signed by Publicity Secretary Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, claims that both figures lack the constitutional power to call NEC meetings and accuses them of impersonating the roles of the National Chairman and National Secretary.

The statement also highlights Section 484 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act, which defines impersonation and suggests that the actions of Obi and Otti could be seen as a felony punishable by imprisonment.

In its declaration, the Labour Party calls for an investigation into the actions of Obi and Otti, urging them to cease their efforts to hold the meeting. The party has given a 72-hour ultimatum for the duo to halt their plans or face formal petitions to the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services for fraud, impersonation, and actions likely to disrupt public peace.
