Kylian Mbappe expressed his elation as he was officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player at the Santiago Bernabeu. The French forward, 25, joined the Spanish giants on a five-year deal following the expiry of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Mbappe’s presentation was delayed due to France’s participation in Euro 2024, where they were eliminated by Spain in the semi-finals. Speaking to over 80,000 fans at the Bernabeu, Mbappe shared his lifelong ambition of playing for Real Madrid.
“I spent endless nights dreaming about one day playing for Real Madrid and today I am one happy guy,” said Mbappe. “My family are so happy here, I can see my mum crying. It’s an incredible day for me, I’ve dreamt of this day since I was a kid and this day means a lot to me.”
Dressed in the club’s new home kit, Mbappe addressed the crowd in Spanish and was introduced by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. Perez highlighted Mbappe’s longstanding connection with the club, stating, “The love that you felt for Real Madrid, and you identifying with this club since your childhood, made it possible for you to be here and to overcome those obstacles on the way to your dream.”
Mbappe’s transfer to Real Madrid marks the culmination of a long pursuit by the club. In 2021, Real Madrid’s £137 million bid for Mbappe was rejected by PSG. In 2023, PSG accepted a world-record £259 million offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, but Mbappe turned it down, determined to fulfill his dream of playing for Real Madrid.
Despite being offered a contract extension by PSG, Mbappe was initially excluded from the club’s pre-season tour but was later reintegrated by manager Luis Enrique. Mbappe departed PSG with an impressive record of 256 goals in 308 appearances.
The unveiling was attended by notable figures, including former Real Madrid manager and player Zinedine Zidane, underscoring the significance of Mbappe’s arrival at the club.
