France captain Kylian Mbappe is set to become the majority owner of second-division club Caen, according to French media reports on Monday. The 25-year-old, who joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, will invest 20 million euros ($21.6 million) to acquire an 80 percent stake in the Normandy-based club from American investors Oaktree, as reported by Le Parisien.
Mbappe, a 2018 World Cup winner, nearly joined Caen as a teenager before ultimately signing with Monaco. Caen, which finished sixth in Ligue 2 last season, has notable former players such as Mbappe’s France teammate N’Golo Kante and former French defender William Gallas. The club, established in 1913 and a two-time Ligue 2 champion, will begin the new season by hosting Paris FC on August 17.
