Governor Ahmed Ododo of Kogi State pledged on Wednesday to immortalize James Anajuwe and Caleb Musa, two students from Confluence State University, Osara, who were killed by kidnappers in May. He also reassured the university community of enhanced security measures on campus.
The announcement came during a meeting with 29 rescued students abducted by gunmen on May 9, 2024. Special Adviser Ismail Isah stated that Ododo hosted the students to restore confidence and demonstrate his administration’s commitment to student safety.
Ododo promised to complete the university’s perimeter fencing within 16 weeks and implement full security surveillance, ensuring round-the-clock emergency response capabilities. “Governor Ododo said he will work with the management of the university to consistently review the security architecture of the school and make improvements where necessary in line with the safe school initiative of the state government,” Isah’s statement read.
The governor’s plans include honoring the memory of the slain students and inspecting ongoing projects such as the Senate building, new hostels, and the university’s demonstration farms.
Commissioner for Education Wemi Jones praised the governor for the swift rescue of 29 of the 31 abducted students. Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdulrahman Salawu also expressed gratitude for Ododo’s leadership and support following the abduction.
