Khadija Shaw described Manchester City’s victory over Liverpool as an “ugly win” but emphasized its importance as City came from behind to reclaim top spot in the Women’s Super League. The Jamaican striker scored twice in the second half, including a stoppage-time winner, to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Anfield.
“Sometimes an ugly win is just as important for the three points,” Shaw told Sky Sports. “We just have to keep going.”
Liverpool took the lead in the first half through Olivia Smith’s stunning long-range effort. Despite their resilience, injuries to key players like Smith and center-back Gemma Bonner left them vulnerable. City capitalized on this in the second half, with Shaw equalizing before her late goal sealed the win.
City boss Gareth Taylor praised his team’s perseverance: “We were patient and kept probing until the end. I was really proud of that last half hour of the performance.”
Liverpool, without manager Matt Beard due to illness, put in a strong display but were unable to hold off City’s relentless pressure. Assistant boss Scott Rogers said the team was “devastated” by the last-minute goal but remained positive about their performance.
The win pushed Manchester City one point clear at the top of the WSL, ahead of Chelsea, Manchester United, and Brighton.
