Katsina Governor Dikko Radda Launches Tree Planting Campaign to Combat Climate Change

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State on Saturday initiated a tree planting campaign in Daura as part of the state’s efforts to address climate change. The project, organized by the Katsina State Agro-climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape project in collaboration with the Ahmed Usman Pure Life Foundation, targets planting 10,000 tree seedlings, with 3,000 designated for Daura.

The launch event, held at Kangiwa Square in Daura Local Government Area, was attended by prominent government officials, including the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Nasir Yahya, and the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Garba Faskari.

Governor Radda announced that 1,000 primary school pupils would each receive a tree seedling along with ₦5,000 to support the nurturing of the trees to maturity. He highlighted the campaign as a vital element of the state’s climate strategy, saying, “By involving our youth and providing them with the resources to care for these trees, we are investing in both our environment and our future generations.”

The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Faruk, expressed his gratitude to the organizers for selecting Daura as the launch site, emphasizing the significance of tree planting in combating desert encroachment. He urged citizens to actively participate in planting and nurturing the trees.

State Commissioner of Environment, Hamza Faskari, represented by Permanent Secretary Muntari Kado, shared that over 3,000 tree seedlings have been distributed across the state, with close supervision planned to ensure at least 80% of the trees reach maturity. He stated, “This initiative sets a precedent for other states in the fight against climate change, promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development.”
