British number one Katie Boulter was eliminated from the China Open after a straight-set loss to world number six Coco Gauff. The 28-year-old was defeated 7-5, 6-2 in the third round, as Gauff advanced to the fourth round in Beijing.
Gauff took an early 5-2 lead in the first set, but Boulter fought back to level at 5-5, winning three consecutive games. However, Gauff held her nerve to secure the set after Boulter double-faulted and sent a forehand wide, closing it out in 50 minutes.
In the second set, Gauff broke Boulter’s serve and went up 4-1. Despite Boulter saving a match point, Gauff eventually broke again to win the set and match in just 35 minutes.
Gauff will next face either Japan’s Naomi Osaka or fellow American Katie Volynets in the fourth round as she continues her bid for a second title of the year.
