Kano State Governor Subsidizes Hajj Fares for Intending Pilgrims Amidst Price Hike

In a bid to alleviate the financial burden on intending pilgrims amidst the recent increase in Hajj fares by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has initiated a subsidy program, providing N500,000 for each Kano intending pilgrim registered under the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board.

The Director-General of the Board, Alhaji Lamin Dan Baffa, announced the subsidy during a briefing with journalists on Wednesday. He cited the economic hardship faced by many individuals and the significant rise in Hajj fares attributed to the instability of the forex exchange rate as reasons for the subsidy initiative.

Dan Baffa emphasized the importance of intending pilgrims paying the balance of their fares before March 28, 2024, as directed by NAHCON. He clarified that the subsidy would apply to those who had already made part-payments to the board, with over 2,900 intending pilgrims having already done so.

Earlier in the week, NAHCON had revealed a considerable increase in Hajj fares, totaling N6,617,032.91, with an increment of N1,918,032.91. Under the new pricing scheme, fresh intending pilgrims are required to pay N8,254,464.74 as the full Hajj fare for the year.
