Kano High Court Grants Bail to TikToker Murja Kunya Amid Controversy

In a significant development, the Kano State High Court, under the leadership of Justice Nasiru Saminu, granted bail to the controversial TikToker, Murja Kunya, on Monday. The bail, set at N500,000, required two reliable sureties, one being a relative and the other an individual with landed property in Kano municipal. Murja sought bail following a directive from the Kano Shari’ah Court for a mental evaluation. Justice Saminu stressed the importance of Murja’s release, citing the Easter break and her prolonged custody since February 20. Additionally, the court mandated a restriction on Murja’s social media usage until the case is concluded, with any violation subject to arrest by the Kano Commissioner of Police. The judge also ordered the presence of the defendants’ counsel, the Attorney General, representatives from the Hisbah Board, and the Commissioner of Police to address amendments to the Kano State Hisbah Board Amended Law for proper adjudication. The case has been adjourned until May 16, 2024, for further proceedings. Murja’s arrest by the Hisbah Board stemmed from concerns over her conduct and postings on Twitter, alleging immorality.
