Former Wales and British & Irish Lions centre Jonathan Davies has officially retired from professional rugby. The 36-year-old, who left Scarlets after the 2023-24 season, confirmed his decision on Instagram, citing his desire to focus on family life after an illustrious career.
Davies, affectionately known as “Foxy,” earned 96 caps for Wales, scoring 55 tries in 209 appearances over two spells with Scarlets. He also toured twice with the British & Irish Lions, in 2013 and 2017, winning the prestigious player of the series award against New Zealand.
In his retirement post, Davies reflected on the joy of spending quality time with his newborn son and wife, saying, “I have come to the decision to call time on my professional rugby career. I will inevitably miss the camaraderie of training and playing competitively alongside my teammates, but over these past few months, I have been able to assess all of my options and reflect on a career of which I am incredibly proud.”
During his 18-year career, Davies achieved remarkable success, including two Grand Slams, two Six Nations titles, and a Pro12 championship with Scarlets. He also had a stint with French side Clermont Auvergne. Known for his resilience through injuries, Davies expressed gratitude to his family, teammates, coaches, and fans.
“I am so grateful for the support, especially when faced with the challenges and setbacks of injuries. It’s been an incredible ride,” he wrote. Now, Davies looks forward to his next chapter as a father, husband, and beyond.
“Diolch, Foxy.”
