Joint Action Committee of Nigerian University Staff Unions to End Warning Strike

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAATS) has announced the conclusion of the ongoing seven-day and three-day warning strikes by midnight on Sunday.

The JAC of SSANU and NASU had been drawing attention to their exclusion from salary payments that commenced for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in February. This exclusion stemmed from the government’s implementation of a ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ during strikes initiated by ASUU, SSANU, and NAATS in 2022, lasting eight months, four months, and five-and-a-half months respectively.

Despite the NAATS joining the strike and initiating its three-day warning action, the unions have decided to end their strikes. During a Zoom meeting with journalists, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, the National President of JAC of SSANU and NASU, expressed disappointment at the government’s lack of response to their demands.

While the unions are set to resume work on Monday, Ibrahim highlighted the government’s failure to address the non-teaching staff’s grievances, emphasizing the need for further deliberations by the National Executive Council to determine the next course of action.
