John Stones’ Stoppage-Time Heroics Keep Manchester City Close to Liverpool in Title Race

John Stones’ dramatic header in the fifth minute of stoppage time secured a 2-1 victory for Manchester City over a resilient Wolves side, keeping the defending champions in close pursuit of Premier League leaders Liverpool. Initially ruled offside, Stones’ goal was awarded after referee Chris Kavanagh’s review, leaving Wolves furious and heartbroken.

Wolves took an early lead after just seven minutes when Jorgen Strand Larsen tapped in Nelson Semedo’s perfect cross, catching City by surprise. Despite City dominating possession, it wasn’t until the 33rd minute that Josko Gvardiol found the top corner with a long-range strike to equalize.

Wolves, however, put up a stubborn defense, with goalkeeper Jose Sa making crucial saves to deny Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias. Despite constant pressure, City struggled to break through until Stones’ late intervention from Phil Foden’s corner gave them the decisive goal.

The win is crucial for Pep Guardiola’s side, especially in the context of a tight title race with Liverpool and Arsenal. While City briefly went top of the table before Liverpool’s victory over Chelsea, Guardiola knows every point will matter this season.

For Wolves, the defeat was a bitter blow. Winless and at the bottom of the table, they showed plenty of determination and grit but were ultimately undone by City’s persistence. Manager Gary O’Neil’s side, while competitive, are still searching for their first win, and pressure is mounting as they struggle to turn performances into results.
