John Stones believes England’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against Slovakia in the Euro 2024 last-16 could be a pivotal moment for the team. Jude Bellingham’s injury-time overhead kick equalized before Harry Kane’s extra-time goal sealed the win.
“It shows that unity, and togetherness, as a team,” said the 30-year-old defender. “When you have done those things, you can believe you can do it better, and when it gets tough you can always recap to these moments.”
Stones admitted he thought England were heading for an early exit before their late resurgence. “I thought we were going home up to 60 minutes into the game,” he added. “To change the mindset, and for us all to keep the belief, it has a lot of power behind it – for ourselves and other teams.”
Despite appearing in training with heavy strapping around his knee, Stones confirmed he is “all good.” England will need to find a new centre-back partner for Stones, as Marc Guehi is suspended for Saturday’s quarter-final against Switzerland, which will be shown live on the BBC.
Criticism Fuels Southgate’s Determination
Manager Gareth Southgate will manage his 100th game for England this weekend, amid significant criticism over the team’s performances at Euro 2024. Stones said the negative feedback only motivates Southgate more.
“He pushes it aside… it will make him want to win even more, do better,” Stones said. He praised Southgate’s impact on the team’s culture and emphasized the importance of winning a major trophy.
Facing Switzerland
Stones acknowledged the challenge posed by Switzerland, who eliminated Italy to reach the quarter-finals. He praised his Manchester City teammate Manuel Akanji and the Swiss team’s performance in the tournament.
“Playing against the likes of Manu who is an exceptional player… they have some great players and it will be a really good match up for us and a test for us,” said Stones.
