JOHESU Condemns Prolonged Abduction of Doctor in Kaduna

The Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (JOHESU/AHPA) has strongly condemned the ongoing abduction of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a Registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna. Dr. Popoola was kidnapped on December 27, 2023, and remains in captivity, prompting outrage from JOHESU/AHPA.

In a statement signed by National Chairman Kabir Minjibir and National Secretary Martin Egbanubi, the union expressed deep concern over the increasing vulnerability of healthcare workers across Nigeria. JOHESU/AHPA highlighted that the persistent kidnappings of medical professionals severely undermine the country’s healthcare delivery system, describing the trend as “dangerous.”

The union called for urgent intervention from security agencies to address the situation and expressed solidarity with the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), who launched a seven-day nationwide warning strike on August 26 in response to the abduction of their colleague.

JOHESU/AHPA also appealed to both the Federal Government and state authorities to intensify efforts to secure the release of Dr. Popoola and other kidnapped individuals. Additionally, the union urged President Bola Tinubu to implement more advanced security measures to combat the escalating threats of kidnapping, banditry, and organized crimes in the country.
