Substitute Jhon Duran’s remarkable long-range goal helped Aston Villa stage a thrilling comeback to defeat Everton 3-2, leaving the Blues winless after four Premier League games. Everton crumbled from a two-goal lead for the second consecutive match, repeating their collapse from the previous game against Bournemouth.
Everton started strong, despite early pressure from Villa, including Ollie Watkins’ header cleared off the line. Dwight McNeil pounced on an error by former Toffee Amadou Onana, drilling a low shot into the far corner to give Everton a surprise lead. Dominic Calvert-Lewin then doubled the advantage with a towering header, leaving Villa trailing 2-0 by the 27th minute.
However, Villa fought back before halftime as Lucas Digne’s cross found Watkins, who nodded in his first goal of the season. Watkins then slotted in an equalizer after Jack Harrison’s poor clearance, turning the tide in Villa’s favor.
The dramatic winner came 14 minutes from time when Duran, from 25 yards out, unleashed a swerving, dipping shot into the top corner, giving Everton keeper Jordan Pickford no chance. The Colombian striker’s sensational strike secured all three points for Unai Emery’s team, lifting Villa to third in the Premier League table.
For Everton, it was a familiar story of defensive frailty and missed opportunities. Despite taking a two-goal lead, they faltered under pressure, and Calvert-Lewin missed two key chances that could have altered the game’s outcome. Sean Dyche’s side remains rooted at the bottom of the table, still searching for their first points of the season.
