Idris Tenshi, an Islamic cleric, has issued an apology following his recent inflammatory remarks targeting Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the President. Tenshi faced significant backlash after he referred to Mrs. Tinubu as an “infidel” who should be killed during a sermon.
In the controversial sermon delivered in the Hausa language, Tenshi labeled Mrs. Tinubu as among the leaders of unbelievers, prompting outrage and calls for his arrest and prosecution.
The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) demanded swift action from the government and security agencies in response to Tenshi’s comments.
However, in a new video, Tenshi expressed remorse for his words, acknowledging that his statements were a mistake. He clarified that he now understands the verses he quoted differently, thanks to explanations provided by fellow clerics.
“I would like to pass this message to Nigerians regarding a video I did which is circulating on social media,” Tenshi stated. “All the things I said were a mistake and I don’t stand on the words I said. Other clerics have given me a proper explanation of the verse that I quoted.”
As a gesture of contrition, Tenshi extended his apology directly to Mrs. Tinubu, acknowledging her as a figure of maternal significance to Nigerians. He emphasized that the remarks were made during a politically charged period and emphasized his commitment to supporting Bola Tinubu and his family now that they are in power.
“I am apologizing to her excellency Remi Tinubu over the comments I made and taking back the words I said,” Tenshi continued. “I am also apologizing to Nigerians because she (Remi Tinubu) is like a mother to us.”
