Ireland Clinch Historic Win Over England in Last-Ball Thriller

Ireland secured their first one-day international victory over England since 2001 in dramatic fashion, winning by three wickets in Belfast. Chasing a rain-revised target of 155 from 22 overs, Ireland faced a tense final over, needing eight runs with three wickets in hand. After losing three wickets in three balls, they required four off the last delivery. Alana Dalzell struck the boundary on her first ball to seal the win.

Ireland had been cruising toward victory, thanks to Gaby Lewis’ brilliant 72 off 56 balls, but England’s Lauren Filer triggered a collapse, taking two wickets in the 19th over. In the final over, Mady Villiers ran out Una Raymond-Hoey before dismissing Alice Tector and Jane Maguire for golden ducks, setting up the thrilling finish.

Earlier, England’s Tammy Beaumont led the charge with a 52 off 42 balls, but a mid-order collapse saw the visitors bowled out for 153, with Aimee Maguire claiming a career-best 5-19. Despite Ireland’s near-collapse, Dalzell’s boundary secured a famous win.

The victory comes after Ireland were bowled out for just 45 in the previous match, marking a remarkable turnaround. Though England claimed the ODI series 2-1, Ireland’s victory provides momentum heading into the T20 series in Dublin.

Captain Reactions:

England captain Kate Cross praised her team’s fightback but acknowledged, “Credit to Ireland, I thought they were the better side today.” Ireland’s Gaby Lewis expressed pride in her team’s resilience, saying, “We bounced back brilliantly today.”
