Illbliss Laments Losing Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy to Afrobeats

Veteran rapper Tobechukwu Ejiofor, popularly known as Illbliss, has expressed regret over the transition of music stars Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy from rap to afrobeats, a move that ultimately catapulted them to global fame.

In a recent interview with Radio Now 95.3 FM, Illbliss reflected on the golden era of rap music in Nigeria, reminiscing about the time when these artists were making waves as rappers. “We (Hip-Hop community) lost a lot of our soldiers; we lost Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido. Three of them were rappers. I guess they found the afrobeats vibe and it made them global stars,” Illbliss stated.

The rapper acknowledged the harsh realities of the Nigerian music industry, admitting that hip-hop is not as lucrative as other genres like afrobeats. He pointed out that only a select few rappers, including himself, have managed to achieve commercial success in the country. “Hip-hop is a tough sell in Nigeria. Not everybody has been as fortunate as myself or Vector, M.I., Reminisce, Olamide, and Phyno. It’s not a long list,” Illbliss noted.

While afrobeats continues to dominate the global music scene, Illbliss’s remarks highlight the challenges faced by Nigerian rappers in maintaining their craft and achieving widespread recognition.
