IGP Orders Movement Restriction for Edo Election, Ensures Tight Security Measures

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has imposed movement restrictions and additional security protocols for the Edo State governorship election set for Saturday, September 21, 2024. This directive, aimed at ensuring a peaceful and credible election, was detailed in a press statement by the Police Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in Benin City on Saturday.

Egbetokun ordered a ban on all vehicular movement from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Election Day across roads, waterways, and other transportation routes, with exceptions only for essential services like accredited media, electoral officials, ambulances, and emergency responders.

Additionally, security escorts and aides accompanying VIPs to polling booths or collation centres have been banned, while unauthorized security outfits are prohibited from operating during the election. The IGP also emphasized that the use of sirens by unauthorized vehicles is strictly forbidden.

The Inspector General stressed the importance of providing access to polling stations for vulnerable groups, including individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with mobility challenges.

Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Edo election, Frank Mba, urged citizens to avoid prank calls to the control room and instead use text messages for effective communication. Designated election helplines and control room numbers were also provided for reporting suspicious activities.

The IGP appealed to political parties and supporters to conduct themselves responsibly, warning that any violations or attempts to disrupt the election will be dealt with according to the law.
