Igbo General Assembly in Europe Urges Tinubu to Release Nnamdi Kanu

The Igbo General Assembly (IGA) in Europe has called on President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), stating that his release would bring an end to the ongoing agitations and insecurity in the South East region.

Speaking at the 14th Igbo General Assembly in Sevilla, Spain, Chief Kingsley Ozo Ndibe, President General of IGA, criticized the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for repeatedly disregarding court orders granting bail to Kanu. He emphasized that this was a violation of Kanu’s fundamental human rights.

Ndibe expressed confidence that Kanu’s release would restore peace and stability in the region, saying: “We leaders of Ndigbo in Europe are appealing to President Bola Tinubu to urgently consider releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally. His detention has contributed to the unrest and hardship in the South East, and we believe that his release will end the agitations.”

He urged Tinubu to apply a political solution to Kanu’s case, similar to the approach taken with agitators in other parts of Nigeria, including the case of Sunday Igboho.

Also speaking at the event, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain, Naomey Chika Nwachukwu, called on Nigerians to remain patient with President Tinubu’s policies, assuring them that the administration’s initiatives will yield positive results in time. Nwachukwu highlighted the importance of unity among Nigerians and praised the cultural displays at the event, noting that such gatherings promote national cohesion and cultural pride.

She added, “We are one, irrespective of the part of Nigeria we come from, and it is important to showcase our culture wherever we find ourselves.”
