Hudson-Smith and Hodgkinson Smash Records at London Diamond League

Matthew Hudson-Smith shattered his European 400m record, and Keely Hodgkinson set a national 800m record, signaling Great Britain’s Olympic gold medal hopes at the London Diamond League.

Record-Breaking Performances: Hudson-Smith, 29, clocked 43.74 seconds, the fastest time globally this year, just six days before the Paris 2024 opening ceremony. Hodgkinson, 22, improved her world-leading time to 1:54.61, leading British teammates Jemma Reekie and Georgia Bell to personal bests.

Sprint Stars Shine: American Noah Lyles ran a personal best of 9.81 seconds to win the 100m, while Britain’s Louie Hinchliffe finished fourth in 9.97. Dina Asher-Smith placed third in the 200m with a season-best 22.07 seconds, followed by Daryll Neita in fourth.

Other Notable Performances: Gabrielle Thomas of the USA won the women’s 200m in 21.82 seconds. Molly Caudery placed third in the women’s pole vault with a clearance of 4.65m, while Katarina Johnson-Thompson recorded a long jump best of 6.54m.

British Hopes for Paris: Hudson-Smith and Hodgkinson, key gold medal contenders, showcased their peak form. Hudson-Smith, who missed Tokyo 2020 due to injury, expressed excitement: “It’s a long time coming and I’m actually healthy. Now I’m putting in a lot of work. The proof is in the pudding.” Hodgkinson, a three-time global silver medalist, aims for her first global gold in Paris.

Sprint Relay Success: Asher-Smith and Neita, along with Amy Hunt and Imani-Lara Lansiquot, equaled the British record in the women’s 4x100m relay with 41.55 seconds.

Men’s 100m Finale: Lyles capped the event with a personal best, preparing for his bid for four track titles in Paris. Britain’s Zharnel Hughes and Jeremiah Azu finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Additional Highlights: Femke Bol of the Netherlands set a meeting record of 51.30 in the women’s 400m hurdles. Alison dos Santos of Brazil won the men’s 400m hurdles in 47.18. Jamaica’s Nickisha Pryce set a world-leading time of 48.57 in the women’s 400m.
